THE MATRIX ONLINE BACKGROUND STORYLINE
Source: <The Matrix Online>

BE CAREFULL!! DO NOT READ IF YOU DIDN'T SEE THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS!

Scroll to read the first sentence:

[Neo is dead. However, in his sacrifice, he insured peace between the humans of Zion and the Machine civilization.] The Matrix Online takes place immediately following Revolutions. It is a tense time, and while the truce has held, no one is certain how long it will last. It is very much a cold-war scenario with all sides preparing for the worst, but most praying for peace.

In the Matrix itself, three powerful organizations vie for control.
The Merovingian continues to solidify his powerbase in the face of record numbers of immigrating Exiles (machine programs that have fled into the Matrix to avoid deletion). For the Merovingian and his ilk, the continuation of the Matrix is essential. Their very existence is now housed within the code of the Matrix. And while many Exiles exhibit incredible powers, each one has a Killcode; a specific vulnerability that can instantly destroy them.

The Machines reluctantly allow the recruitment of new redpills, but the sheer number of redpills leaving the body pods is of great concern to them. Without energy from the pods, a power crisis will occur; something that the Machines want to avoid at all costs. In addition, redpills performing rule-breaking feats may be having an effect on the population at large. People rejecting the Matrix en masse may very well be a breaking point for the truce.

Zion continues its efforts to free those who see past the Matrix, but with more and more people leaving the pods, their organization is becoming fractured. Some believe that the peace Neo secured must be protected at all costs. Others believe that the machines cannot be trusted, and are quietly preparing for the eventual outbreak of hostilities. There are also those who believe that Neo is still alive...

As a newly awakened redpill, you are thrust into this maelstrom of subterfuge and mistrust. Choose your loyalties but trust no one. The ultimate fate of the Matrix is in your hands.

THE MATRIX COMICS: VOLUME TWO
Source: <The Matrix>

For those of you who loved the Matrix Comics (me included), this is great news:

In November, get ready for THE MATRIX COMICS: VOLUME TWO. This volume includes work by Michael Oeming, Poppy Z. Brite, Paul Chadwick, Dave Dorman, Kaare Andrews, Keron Grant, Jason Keith, Ted Mckeever, Tim Sale, Bill Sienkiewicz, Steve Skroce, among others.

In fact, here's something no one has seen yet, a panel from Kaare Andrews' story. Be prepared for 13 more pages from Andrews, covering many of the main characters from the films.

Another question we get: will any of these stories take up where the third film ended?

Yes.

We get asked a lot of questions around these parts. Besides when is the box set releasing (December 7th), the question asked most often remains: what are Larry and Andy Wachowski are up to next, post Matrix. Well, for starters, they have established their own comic book company, BURLYMAN ENTERTAINMENT.
The first title, due in November, is DOC FRANKENSTEIN, which the Brothers Wachowski are writing. It is being illustrated by THE MATRIX TRILOGY Key Storyboard Artist Steve Skroce (Spider-Man, Wolverine).

This 32 page full color comic will come out bi-monthly from November. (The first half of the first issue is available for viewing on the <official site>.)

In December, we release our second ongoing bi-monthly series from BURLYMAN ENTERTAINMENT, THE SHAOLIN COWBOY. This one is both illustrated and written by none other than the Conceptual Designer on all three MATRIX films, Geof Darrow (HARD BOILED, BIG GUY AND RUSTY THE BOY ROBOT). Larry and Andy will be writing an intro (of sorts) to each bi-monthly title.

This 32 page full color comic will come out bi-monthly from December.

THE MATRIX ONLINE RELEASE DATE
Source: <Gamespot>

The Matrix Online will get a simultanious release in Europe and the US on January 18, 2005:

Sega and Warner Bros. plan simultaneous launch of their movie-inspired MMORPG next year in the US and Europe.

The holiday season grew a little less crowded today. Sega and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced the Matrix Online will no longer ship in November 2004 as previously expected. Instead, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the Matrix sci-fi film trilogy will launch on January 18, 2005. The game's release will be simultaneous in North America and Europe.

Sega and Warner Bros. also announced that they would begin a Matrix Online preorder program next week. Those who preorder the game will get access to its closed beta, which will start on November 18, 2004. "During the pre-order beta, players will experience The Matrix Online's full mechanics and abilities," said the two companies in a statement. "[It] will be an opportunity for members of the Matrix community to establish allegiances, join guilds and plan strategies for the full game."

Those purchasing preorders will also get access to the game three days ahead of the general public, and their in-game characters will receive "an advanced-level 'Hyper Jump' ability with a special effect."

Billed as "continuing the saga" of The Matrix trilogy, the Matrix Online is being produced by Warner-owned Monolith Productions, with input from the films' directors, the Wachowski brothers. Players will be able to join one of three factions--the Humans, the Machines, or the Exiles--in the game, which will feature a complex skill and ability system as well as "an extensive mission structure." GameSpot's feature preview has more data on the MMORPG.

GameSpot spoke with Jason Hall, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, shortly before today's news was released.
